The list of causes of dry skin can be extended. These include daily bathing habits (think hot tubs, drying with towels), winter weather, and a deficiency in natural oils as we age.

The good news? You don’t need to see a dermatologist if you aren’t managing a severe skin condition. Consider adding a home remedy to your skin-care regimen.

These dry-skin remedies may be available in your kitchen. Many of the ingredients listed below, including coconut oil and tea, are commonly referred to as “remedies,” even though they have been used in homeopathy for centuries. It is important to note that if you have a skin condition that could be causing dry skin, you should consult a dermatologist. This can prevent dry skin from getting worse.

“Home remedies can be great for all skin types, especially in a pinch. Or, opt for other skin-care solutions,” says Jennifer Adell. She is a licensed aesthetician and senior aesthetician at New Beauty and Wellness. However, you should consult a dermatologist or aesthetician if your skin suffers from chronic conditions like rosacea, psoriasis, and cystic acne.

Instead of buying a product, why not opt for a natural dry-skin remedy?

A home remedy is worth considering if you are concerned about long ingredient lists. Many ingredients can be found in over-the-counter products. They not only have active moisturizing products but also contain preservatives. Christine Poblete -Lopez is the residency program director and vice-chair of the department of dermatology at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

According to Michigan State University, this is often true for water-based products because bacteria thrive in these formulas. These preservatives and additives, like alcohol and fragrances, can cause irritation, dry skin, and even allergic reactions.

Keep your skin-care routine simple if you have sensitive skin or allergies. Oils are excellent for dry skin as they don’t contain preservatives.

Remember, however, that oils and other over-the-counter remedies are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S does not regulate oils and other over-the-counter medications. To be safe, it’s always a good idea to consult a dermatologist before adding any DIY recipes to your skin-care regimen.

How natural remedies can soothe dry, itchy skin

Sebum is a natural oil that your skin produces. However, everyday actions like forgetting to apply moisturizer or washing hands with soapy water can strip these oils. Oils can be used to restore the skin’s sheen, protect the moisture barrier and protect against acne.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, dermatologists recommend that acne sufferers choose an oil with care. Overproduction of sebum is a common cause of acne. The tea-tree oil is another option. Some studies support that tea oil can improve mild to moderate acne. Tea tree oil may irritate the skin.

You can make DIY nourishing scrubs or a nourishing mask using oils. Poblete Lopez suggests that avocado, lavender, and castor oil might be suitable ingredients for dry skin.

Coconut oil, another oil that you might have in your kitchen cupboard, can be a good option for people who aren’t prone to getting acne. In a previous controlled, randomized trial, people suffering from atopic dermatitis (type eczema) experienced an improvement in their symptoms when they applied virgin coconut oil to their skin.

Aloe vera is a houseplant with natural healing properties and can also be used as a natural moisturizer. A review in the June 2019 Foods for Human Nutrition found that aloe vera gel has mucopolysaccharides such as hyaluronic acids, which help to lock moisture into the skin. This makes it a natural moisturizing skin-care product you should try.

DIY Natural Remedies to Moisturize Dry skin

These simple home remedies can help you treat your dry skin the next time it happens.

Use an olive oil moisturizer to soothe dry skin.

Adell suggests extra-virgin oil for quick moisture — but only if it’s urgent.

She says that olive oil is rich in vitamin E and antioxidants. Adele warns that it can clog your pores and may not be a good option for those with acne-prone skin.

Consult a dermatologist before applying olive oil directly to your skin. Research published in December 2017 by the International Journal of Molecular Sciences Notes shows that olive oil may reduce inflammation. However, it can cause skin damage by being applied topically.

Adell suggests that you use olive oil in a natural or regular form. It shouldn’t be refined with any other oils. You should also not apply it to your skin or dry massage areas like your elbows.

DIY a Rich, Creamy Avocado Mask

Adell has tried it in her family at home to soothe dry skin. She says the face mask is rich in antioxidants and probiotics, promoting glowing, healthy skin. According to an independent review published in September 2019, Nutrients, 1/2 avocado can be combined with 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt. This may help improve skin texture due to its lactic acid content. Use the mixture on clean skin. Let it sit for five to ten minutes before you rinse it off.

The other half of the avocado is good for you. A pilot study published in the September 2022 Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology showed that avocado consumption by women increased skin firmness and elasticity.

Another study published a combination of avocado oil, water, and saffron. Although researchers found that the mix improved the skin’s appearance and reduced wrinkles, it is unclear whether there was any significant moisturization.

Make a natural coconut oil and sugar scrub.

A gentle homemade sugar scrub can treat dead skin cells, which could cause your skin to appear dry. Michigan State University suggests mixing 1 cup brown sugar or granulated with 1/2 cup coconut oil. You can also add lavender essential oil to the scrub if you wish. This will give it a natural scent and may help you relax and reduce anxiety. After 30 seconds of gently massaging the scrub onto your skin, rinse it with warm water. To seal the benefits of freshly exfoliated skin, the AAD recommends using a soothing moisturizer.

This type of exfoliation may not suit all skin types. The AAD does not recommend scrubs for sensitive, acne-prone or irritated skin.

Adele warns against sugar scrubs for sensitive skin, particularly on the face. She says that the skin on your face can be more sensitive than your body’s, and physical exfoliation can cause irritation or sensitivity. My favorite exfoliation methods are chemical peel pads and enzyme powders.

Make an easy oatmeal soap to calm your skin.

Poblete Lopez says that a cup of oatmeal in a warm tub can naturally rehydrate dry skin. She says that the oat product is soothing and helps retain moisture. You can tie the oats to the faucet with pantyhose and run the bathwater through them.

If you suffer from eczema, oatmeal may provide relief.

Use a homemade Oatmeal Honey Mask to exfoliate your face.

Oatmeal can also be used as a mask or exfoliator. Combine two tablespoons of oatmeal with one tablespoon of honey and a splash of water. It can be used to exfoliate and then washed off with water. Or, you can leave it on for up to 20 minutes to make a soothing, hydrating treatment. A review was published in the October 2021 Open Life Sciences. Honey may have antimicrobial qualities that could help speed up wound healing.
