In this clipper over comb tutorial I will walk you through the basics of this classic barbering method.

You can create clean, crisp haircuts with just a clipper and clipper comb.

Let’s get started!

Step 1: Basic Technique & Holding Comb.

Then, I allow the comb to turn easily by gripping it between my thumb and index finger. This grip is crucial because the action takes place at the spine of the comb.

What I do is:

The comb is slid into the hair, and I tilt it at a 45-degree angle towards myself. This technique is the foundation for the whole cut.

Step 2: Direction & Angling.

While I am working, I remember that the direction the comb is facing guides the hair. I can use the comb in a variety of ways. For example, I can flip it to create a blunt edge or I could angle it to determine the length techniques every skilled New York barber masters through experience and precision.

The angles are what shape the haircut.

Step 3: The Importance Of Proper Hold.

It is important to maintain a comb-hold, both for precision and to prevent wrist fatigue. It was a little awkward at first but with more practice it becomes easier.

This is important because gives you greater control when you are resetting your hair’s direction. This is an old trick but it’s golden for managing short and medium length hair.

Step 4: Efficiency & Control.

This method is a staple in my kit. It’s all about efficiency. This is my go-to method efficiency.

This technique allows me to be quick in a busy barbershop without compromising quality. I always cut at the spines of the comb and never forget to comb the hair regularly to keep it neat.

Step 5: Tips & Application.

The contrast between short and long hair is my guide when I am shaping the hair around the head. As a final step, I use my clippers to outline the hairline, but keep them open so as not to go too short.

As a beginner, I recommend use a guard, such as a 0.5 , 1, or 1.5 , to protect against an accidental scalping. You will feel more confident and have a safety net.

My Tips & Tricks.

Here are some of my own personal tips and tricks for mastering the clipper-over-comb technique.

  • Start safe: Open the clipper lever to create a safety margin, like ‘clipper-insurance’.
  • Protect Yourself: Attach a guard (no. 1, 1.5, or 2) to prevent going too short if you slip.
  • Extra hands: Use the second comb when creating clean hairlines around the hairline to control stray hairs.
  • Rhythm over Speed: Work with hair growth, and use short hair as a reference.

My walkthrough will hopefully shed some light on the art of clipper over combing. This is a game changer for me and I think it could be for you as well.
